As we walked into the parking lot of our home of 2 days we encountered an impromptu marketplace. The dancers from the previous night had spread blankets of jewelry and sparkly items in a large, neat circle. A net to catch us. And it did.
While perusing the different blankets I came upon this mother and child and was taken aback by the eyes of the baby. They were an ethereal gray-blue, but more than that they were surrounded by smudgy blackness. I had to ask. I learned that mothers would apply kohl to the baby’s eyes just after they were born. In most cases this is used as a way to keep the evil eye away from their children.
